Home Alone plot summary
It's a day before the McAllisters, a large family, go on holiday in Paris. Kevin, the 8-year-old, is despised by everyone else. His mum sends him up to the attic bedroom the night before. The next morning, they leave, forgetting to take him with them, and they don't realise until they are halfway across the Atlantic!
When Kevin discovers he has the large house to himself, he has the time of his life, but he is afraid of the neighbour, an old bearded man. Also, two burglars are determined to break in. Kevin pretends to have a party to scare them away one night, another time he lets firecrackers off in the kitchen. Finally, the burglars do get into the house, but Kevin has filled it with booby traps, which see the crooks being burned and banged on the head, among other things.
point of view (觀點)
The overwhelming success of 'Home Alone' (it spawned two sequels), is enough to guarantee that most people will love this story of a family that departs for Paris on the Christmas holidays, mistakenly leaving an eight-year old boy to fend for himself. And fend he does, when burglars threaten to break in unless he can rig enough booby-traps to keep them out.
That's the simple plot in a nutshell. Macaulay Culkin seems to have no problem carrying most of the film with a wide variety of looks, gestures and expressions--but for my money it's Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci who get the main laughs as the bumbling burglars intent on outwitting the kid's traps.
Others in the cast don't have as much to do but do well enough by their roles, particularly Catherine O'Hara and John Heard as the parents who only discover on the plane that Kevin is missing. The laughs are steady, the color photography is great and the slight story is probably every boy's fantasy of what it might be like to be left home alone. Add to that the holiday flavor of Christmas and a pleasant musical score by John Williams and you have the makings of a classic.
The proof is in the pudding--they must have done something right!!

The Old Man and the Sea may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Certainly, the qualities of Ernest Hemingway's short novel are those which we associate with many great stories of the past: near perfection of form within the limitations of its subject matter, restraint of treatment, regard for the unities of time and place, and evocative simplicity of style. Also, like most great stories, it can be read on more than one level of meaning. On one it is an exciting but tragic adventure story. Sustained by the pride of his calling, the only pride he has left, a broken old fisherman ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks; they leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch. On another level the book is a fable of the unconquerable spirit of man, a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat. On still another it is a parable of religious significance, its theme supported by the writer's unobtrusive handling of Christian symbols and metaphors. Like Coleridge's Ancient Mariner, Hemingway's Cuban fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value, the one real and dramatic, the other moral and devotionally symbolic.
For eighty four days old Santiago had not caught a single fish. At first a young boy, Manolin, had shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day the boy's father told his son to go in another boat. From that time on Santiago worked alone. Each morning he rowed his skiff out into the Gulf Stream where the big fish were. Each evening he came in empty-handed.

Hollywood's true heroes are losing their jobs. Stuntmen and stuntwomen who entertained cinemagoers by falling from the sky, swimming with sharks and driving fast cars have been replaced by technology. After surviving generations of street fights, high falls, and setting fire to themselves, the people behind top actors' most exciting scenes have had nearly all their work substituted by computers. The most dangerous and costly stunts can now be achieved by mixing computer graphics with live action.
In the mid-1990s there were 12,000 registered stunt people, but more than half of them had difficulty finding work. Sometimes, six or seven teams would be working on a film. Then, after a few days, the procers would come in and say, 'You can go home.'
The reason was simple: cost. Computer technology made it possible to create stunts which would either be too expensive or too dangerous to attempt. One example was in Mission Impossible, starring Tom Cruise. In a scene Cruise was seen flying for 35 meters through the air from an exploding helicopter onto the back of a speeding train in the tunnel. In fact, the image of the actor was simply added onto the scene using computers.
A fall from 50 meters into water can now be achieved for a tenth of the cost. With the rise of digital technology, insurance companies became more reluctant to cover real stunts. 'If they know it can be done safely with visual effects, the companies will not insure real stunts,' said a veteran stunt coordinator.
Many in the instry believe stunt people should develop expertise in the new technology, acting as advisers on the virtual stunts. Some, however, think that stunt people can survive in their traditional careers. They believe that audiences won't accept stunts proced by computers for too long
