一般字幕翻譯都是由伊甸園、影視帝國等影視論壇的字幕組翻譯完成，另外也有熱心網友進行翻譯。一部完整的劇目或節目，包括翻譯、字幕、時間軸、校對、壓制等一系列的復雜工作。翻譯要看3遍以上，對比分析確定最佳譯文，按照時間軸排列，進行校對，通常要校對3遍，最後壓制。九十分鍾的電影一個4人字幕組大概要用到10個小時。曾經試過，不過能力不夠，很難進行下去。

隨著寬頻在中國的普及，mpeg4技術的廣泛應用，很多由DVD壓縮的DVDRIP影片以驚人的速度在互聯網間傳播。事實上，在中國，大部分人都不具備直接欣賞外語影片的能力，而很多DVDRIP影片卻恰恰是原聲發音、外語字幕。電影字幕的翻譯作為DVDRIP影片的一個關鍵部分，正逐漸得到人們的關注。這其中包括正版或盜版DVD碟片上rip下來的vobsub字幕，以及由網友自發翻譯的srt格式字幕。
中文字幕翻譯的特點
中文字幕和中文配音在翻譯要求上是不一樣的。比如我們所熟知的上譯廠，配音要求講究口型一致，句子符合中國的口語規范，其優勢是方便觀眾看電影，直接就能聽懂，而不用費力看字幕。其缺點也顯而易見：由於口型上的要求，不得不對句子進行縮減或擴充；由於外國歷史文化的差異，很多雙關、幽默的意思難以表達，不得不舍棄這些句子的翻譯。
以《魔羯星一號》中英雙語版為例，可以明顯看出中文配音和中文字幕的差異。其中有一段劇情是母親給孩子說英語繞口令，如果配音直接翻譯的話，很難做到押韻，於是改為講故事。另一段劇情是一個宇航員邊爬山邊講笑話，這個笑話是有寓意的，直接翻譯成配音的話，很多觀眾會感覺莫名其妙，於是配音版改為宇航員邊爬山邊呼救。該片配音版中很多幽默的成分都改掉了，這樣就損失了很多欣賞電影的樂趣。
電影字幕就較好處理這些問題。首先，沒有口型限制，字幕可以按原文直接翻譯，而幽默和一語雙關的意思可以使用注釋來解決。當然，最好的方法還是學好外語，直接觀看外語字幕的影片。而在個人條件不允許的情況下，字幕翻譯還是最大限度表達英文意思的最佳方法。
