直到18世纪中叶，洛杉矶及其周边地区还是印第安游牧部落的一片自然乐土。1781年9月4日，44名皮肤黝黑的墨西哥殖民者发现了这片山间谷地，成为洛杉矶历史上最早的定居者。

1850年，洛杉矶正式成为美国的法定城市。1853年，好莱坞只有一栋房子。到1870年，这里已成为一片兴旺的农田。

1886年，房地产商哈维·威尔考克斯在洛杉矶郊区买下了一块0.6平方公里的土地。后来，他的夫人在一次旅行时，听到旁边有人说自己来自俄亥俄州的一个叫做好莱坞的地方。
