电影《三进山城》的同名原著小说是军旅作家赛时礼依据自己的亲身战斗经历创作的。小说《三进山城》出版不久,长春电影制片厂的副导演韩敏回天津探家时,在火车站的书摊上看到了小说《三进山城》。

像电影《三进山城》中把手榴弹捆在侦缉队长刁德胜腰间，而把导火索穿过他的衣袖握在我军连长手中的情节，就是赛时礼在战斗中使用过的办法。电影文学剧本《三进山城》与小说相比较，故事情节的主线没有变，不过三进山城的目的由除掉叛徒、营救被捕同志改为配合我军反扫荡，消灭盘踞在齐阳城的鬼子。
