1969年，木匠兄妹推出首張專輯「Offering」，其中翻唱的披頭四老歌「Ticket?to?Ride」大受歡迎，因此隨即把專輯標題改為「Ticket?to?Ride」，為他們奠定了知名度。有一天，作曲大師Burt?Bacharach/柏特拜克拉前去拜訪A&M的另外一位老闆Jerry?Moss/傑瑞摩斯，提起自己在廣播中聽到了木匠兄妹演唱的「Ticket?to?Ride」，非常喜歡。傑瑞摩斯告訴他，這對兄妹已經是該公司旗下的藝人了，因此柏特拜克拉就要求傑瑞摩斯幫忙，設法安排木匠兄妹為他替某家醫院的慈善義演暖場，並且希望理查能夠把一些拜克拉名曲改編成一段混和曲。
這個機會，對於木匠兄妹來說，當然是求之不得的，於是立刻進行編曲的工作。這時，赫伯亞柏特前來找理查，建議他採用柏特拜克拉發表於1963年的一首「They?Long?to?Be?Close?to?You」。柏特拜克拉曾經希望他錄制這首歌曲，不過赫伯亞柏特覺得歌詞當中的某一句對他自己而言，似乎顯得太「年輕」了一點，所以始終沒有予以灌錄。他並且提到，Dionne?Warwick/狄昂華薇克曾經錄制過這首歌曲，但是他希望理查暫時不要理會別人是怎麼唱的，等到他想好自己要如何的詮釋，再去聽華薇克當初的錄音版本。 雖然這首歌由於和理查已經挑好的其他作品不太搭得上，所以最後他的混和曲裡面並沒有採用這首歌曲。但是，理查卻愛上了它，對於它的旋律始終念念不忘，於是當木匠兄妹進行第二張專輯的時候，他就拉著妹妹，一起進入錄音室，灌錄了這首歌。而由於他覺得原來的歌名「They?Long?to?Be?Close?to?You」太長了，所以他就予以簡化，把前面的四個單字加上括弧，簡稱為「Close?to?You」。錄音完成之後，赫伯亞柏特問理查，自己認為市場對這首歌會有什麼樣的反應。理查的回答是，如果它沒有得到冠軍，也將是A&M成立以來最暢銷的作品。
1970年六月，木匠兄妹的「Close?to?You」和同名的專輯上市發行，很快的就打進排行榜。五個星期後，果然和理查的預言一樣，這首歌在七月二十五日登上了冠軍寶座，蟬聯四個星期，也讓木匠兄妹奪得「年度最佳新進藝人」和「年度最佳流行合唱團體」兩項葛萊美獎，為流行音樂史揭開了新的一頁。
