直到18世紀中葉，洛杉磯及其周邊地區還是印第安游牧部落的一片自然樂土。1781年9月4日，44名皮膚黝黑的墨西哥殖民者發現了這片山間谷地，成為洛杉磯歷史上最早的定居者。

1850年，洛杉磯正式成為美國的法定城市。1853年，好萊塢只有一棟房子。到1870年，這里已成為一片興旺的農田。

1886年，房地產商哈維·威爾考克斯在洛杉磯郊區買下了一塊0.6平方公里的土地。後來，他的夫人在一次旅行時，聽到旁邊有人說自己來自俄亥俄州的一個叫做好萊塢的地方。
