一九零零年的第一天。油輪維珍尼亞號載著熙熙攘攘的歡呼人群在紐約港靠岸。在夢想的鼓動下黑壓壓的人流涌下船，迎接充滿可能性的美好未來。喧囂過後，船上除了船員所剩無幾。添煤工人Danny Boodman於是偷偷跑到餐廳搜羅客人遺落下的貴重物品，結果一無所獲。失望之餘，他在鋼琴架上發現一個漂亮的嬰兒。他抱起嬰兒，看見他的目光清澈，皮膚白凈。Danny Boodman對這意外收獲十分驚喜，於是收留了這個孩子，起名叫1900，紀念這孩子在新世紀的第一天被他收養。
善良的Danny Boodman十分疼愛小1900，教他讀書，不讓他受苦。但因為沒有任何出生證明之類的文件，Danny Boodman害怕1900會被別人搶走，不許他離開船艙一步。
在1900八歲時，Danny Boodman死了，在懵懂的1900於生離死別前迷茫時，突然聽見遠處傳來美妙動人的聲音，他回過頭，身邊一個亞洲女人告訴他，這是音樂。
幾日後，1900在夜裡偷偷溜進餐廳，來到白天船屬樂手演奏娛樂上等乘客的鋼琴前，彈起了自己即興發揮的曲子。歌聲吵醒了許多乘客，他們好奇的想去探個究竟，卻都陶醉在這小傢伙如天籟般的音樂中。直到音樂停下來，船長才過去對他說，「1900，你不可以彈琴，這完全不合規矩。」年幼的1900任性的回答說：「讓規矩全都滾蛋。」
幾年後，成人的1900成了維珍尼亞號樂隊的鋼琴師，雖然他從未下過船，但是已經名聲遠揚。在一次暴風雨中，他巧遇了正在暈船的Max，兩個人十分投緣。從此，max成了他一生的知己。
Max十分欣賞他的音樂才華，但也同時對他固執的不肯下船等上陸地感到困惑。他希望1900能向世人展示自己的才華，得到世人的承認，名利雙收，過上好的生活。但對1900而言，世人嚮往的生活對他而言太過遙遠，無法理解，也因此根本不具備誘惑力。
即使彈琴勝過爵士樂的始祖Jelly Roll Morto，讓1900名聲大噪，唱片出版商希望為他錄制唱片，並保證他會名利雙收，他的內心依然平靜，安於生活和音樂帶給他的快樂。直到他遇到一個樸素而迷人的女孩。那一天他正在錄制唱片，女孩順著窗子向里看，和他四目相對，他立刻愛上了她。隨興而發彈奏了一曲為愛情的柔情似水的曲子。（那個女子就是手風琴匠的女兒，老人走出了自己的天地，來到了美國。開立了一家魚店。建立了屬於自己新的世界。而1900卻始終不能釋懷。直到最後一刻。）
在女孩下船的幾周後，1900十分的痛苦，他想去找她。Max的勸說和對愛情生活的憧憬打動了他，他最終決定下船，登上陌生的陸地。那天所有的船員都和他揮手告別，他穿著max送給他的大衣，緩慢的走下船梯，走到一邊時，他茫然的看著諾大的紐約市，凝視了一陣，他突然拿起禮帽拋向遠方，然後回頭，返回了船上。他對Max說，我再也不下船了。
直到許多年後，大戰結束，早已離開維珍尼亞號的max偶然發現破舊的維珍尼亞號就要被炸掉，他堅信1900在船上，幾經周折，最終找到了他。但是1900執意不肯下船，世界太廣闊了，讓他陌生得害怕，這個船對他就是一切。Max最終悲傷的離去，在遠處目送維珍尼亞號和1900一同被炸彈粉碎。
那天他告訴曾對之提起過1900的傳奇故事的樂器行老闆1900死了，老闆也感到惋惜，於是把max因為窘迫買掉的小號還給了他，對他說，一個好的故事比一個舊小號值錢。帶著僅值舊小號的1900的故事，Max離開了，從此，很少再有人會記起那一生不會踏上陸地的天才鋼琴師和他傳奇的一生。
