Hester Prenne was an emigration from England and waited her husband there. She came there for nearly 3 years. Originally there would be nothing strangely happened on her. 「She was a tall lady, with a figure of perfect elegance in a large scale. She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from reglarity of feature an richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes…」(extract from the scarlet letter). She was so different from the local people. But there was a priest, the Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale, who graated from a famous campus, young and gentle, attracted by Hester. And later, Hester found she was pregnant and the officers noticed it. It was an unforgivable misdeed, the officers and the local people wanted to know who the infant』s father was. But Hester rejected to say. She loved the man and wanted to bear all the guilty and agony alone. She thought it could protect her beloved man. But one thing she didn』t predict that her husband, Roger Chillingworth, a scholar, who swore to find out the criminal. 7 years later, when almost everyone has adapted to Hester』s existence, and forgot her guilt graally, Roger found out the man, and afflicted him, Mr.Dimmesdale, the priest. At last, Mr. Dimmesdale admitted his inner secret which excruciated him for 7 years. And then he died in peace. Hester did everything to make up for her shame and to help the natives. And the local people forgot her crime graally. Even at last, the meaning of the scarlet letter A has changed, from Alterer to Angel.
Hester stand too much, her unhappiness marriage, the discrimination from the local people, the cultivation of an infant to young girl… maybe she loved the priest so deeply that she willingly bear everything. But except love, there were maybe other things. Her perseverance, her tolerance, and her loving-kindness, made herself an angel even she had done something wrong before. She brought a bunch of kind-light of civilization to these primitive people, and taught them to be tolerant, and gentle…

Hester Prynne: Boston settler who commits altery and bears a child while awaiting the arrival of her husband from Europe. Authorities require her to wear a piece of red cloth in the shape of an A (standing for alteress) on the bodice of her dress to identify her as a sinner. She refuses to identify her partner in sin. Hester is named after the title character of an Old Testament book. In that book, Esther–a Jew who marries the King of Persia, Ahasuerus (Xerxes I)–and her cousin Mordecai persuade the king to spare the lives of Jews previously singled out for annihilation. The Jewish festival of Purim, also called the Feast of Lots, celebrates their deliverance from the Persian sword.

Pearl: Hester』s child. As her name suggests, she is something good that came from sin. She is also a constant reminder–to Hester and to the townspeople–of Hester's sinfulness. At times, she is an unruly child, a burden to her mother. But Hester loves her just the same
