簡介：Sam is a mentally handicapped patients, work at a Starbucks coffee shop. By chance, he was host to a homeless woman, and she gave birth to a daughter. 劇情簡介：
山姆（西恩·潘）是一個弱智患者，在一間星巴克咖啡店工作。一個偶然的機會，他收留了一個無家可歸的女子，並和她生下一個女兒。但是，女兒一出世，作母親的就不告而別，丟下山姆和幼女相依為命。
山姆給女兒取名露西（達科塔·法寧），因為他特別喜歡聽披頭士樂隊的《天空中擁有鑽石的露西》這首歌。在一群患有精神障礙疾病的朋友的幫助下，山姆獨自撫養著女兒，雖然總不免出些小差錯，日子倒也過得快樂。
露西順利長大了，不但生得漂亮，而且聰明伶俐，雖然只有7歲，她的智力已經超過了山姆，山姆已經無法應付女兒提出的許多問題。乖巧的露西為了不讓父親傷心，故意遷就父親的智力水平，而這顯然不利於露西的智力和情感發育。這對特別的父女引起了社會工作者的注意，他們認為山姆不適合再撫養露西，把露西從他身邊帶走，為她找了一個正常人做養母。山姆不甘心就這樣失去女兒，決定聘請女律師麗塔（米歇爾·菲佛）幫他爭取撫養權。
麗塔雖然精明強干，卻有點自私自利、只關心自己。一開始，她覺得這個案子不可能贏，並不想接，只是受不了同事的激將法，為了向大家證明她也關心社會公益，才勉強接了下來。出乎她的意料，在與山姆的接觸中，麗塔被山姆對露西深沉真摯、無條件的父愛感動，並意識到山姆和正常人一樣，有權利和自己的女兒在一起。
同時，在官司的審理過程中，麗塔也逐漸理清了自己的生活。多年來，她為工作忽略了兒子和家庭，是山姆促使她反省，重投親情懷抱。
