塞思是洛杉磯上空的一位天使，他不知疲倦地四處奔走，為凡人們排憂解難，這天他無影無蹤地到來一家醫院，可惜他來晚了一步，接受心臟外科手術的病人已經死在了手術台上。主刀大夫瑪吉.瑞絲認為這是她的責任，她失去了自信，精神也一下垮了。見此情景，塞思決定留下來幫助瑪吉戰勝精神上的危機。在這個過程中，他愛上了美麗的瑪吉。為了能切切實實地接觸到瑪吉，他冒險使自己顯了形。瑪吉不知道這位突然出現的陌生人就是每天都在幫助也的精靈，她被塞思迷住了。但是，隨著他們的感情越來越深，瑪吉開始懷疑沒有家庭、沒有過去的塞思究竟來自何方。而當她最終得知塞思居然是一位天使時，她陷入深深的困惑之中，在信仰與情感之間難以作出抉擇。與此同時，塞思也發現自己無法真正進入凡人的世界。然而，他已無法割捨對瑪吉的愛。為了能與瑪吉一起分亨生活的快樂，他毅然決定放棄天使的身份，從此做一個凡人。但是，願望有時是無法實現的，即使是一個天使的願望 ......幸福僅僅存在了一個晚上，第二天瑪吉再一次意外中死去…………但，哪怕是僅僅一天的人的生活，有人自由的意志，能真正愛一個人，用永恆來換取，也是值得的…………哪怕，幸福只是一瞬。
{ 賽斯是一名充滿好奇的天使，他被上帝派駐在洛杉磯，專門護送垂死的病人上天堂。而在當地醫院從事心臟科手術的醫生瑪姬卻成日在手術台上幫助病人與死神交戰。因為職業的沖突，天使注意到了這個美麗、自信的女醫生。
有一天她在進行手術時，一名轉危為安的病人突然暴斃，瑪姬深感自責，並且變得十分脆弱，她無法釋懷如此的打擊，頓時對一切失去了信心，甚至開始懷疑作為一個醫生救死扶傷的能力。賽斯前來護送病人上路，目睹了一切，她的自責與脆弱。他情不自禁的想要伸出援手，幫助這個令他心動的女人。於是，他冒著極大的危險，毅然在瑪姬面前現身。他從一名虛無縹緲的天使，變成了一個神秘的陌客，一嘗他嚮往已久卻只能袖手旁觀的凡人生活。
瑪姬漸漸的對賽斯產生了好感，為他的溫柔體貼，以及他們的心意相通。雖然對這名沒有過去的男人感到十分懷疑，但卻無法抵抗他的魅力，這同時也令瑪姬感到困惑與不安。
而此時的賽斯作為一個天使無法融入現實生活，更不能體會到凡人的觸碰等的感受。他深愛著瑪姬，渴望分享她生活的點滴。他從毅然的從高處跳落（變為凡人的方法），成為了一個真實的凡人，會痛，會餓，會哭泣，能體會到各種各樣的感受。
雖然和瑪姬相處的時光很短暫，（瑪姬在購物返程途中出車禍喪生了），卻甜蜜、溫馨。
為了一天的相聚，作為真正同類的相聚，他放棄了一生無痛的生活。「我用一分鍾愛上你，註定要用一生去忘記」，他無悔。}

本片的前身是1987年的優秀德國影片《慾望之翼》，但它真正的目標是《人鬼情未了》。凱奇飾演的天使少了點應有的飄逸氣質。當他靠近女主角時，觀眾非但感覺不到她將得到天使的保護，反而擔心她會遭人暗算。梅格·瑞安幾乎就是重復她在《西雅圖夜未眠》中的角色。影片反映的天使在中國叫作「催命鬼」，專門在醫院里迎接斷氣的人去陰間。片中有一處天使聚會海邊的場面，似乎是向伯格曼的《第七封印》致敬。
