同實際生活中的垮掉一代一樣，《在路上》里的這些人物也是一些蔑視政治權威、世俗觀念、傳統道德和法規法紀的離經叛道的青年人。在麥卡錫時代高壓而沉悶的社會里，這些青年人感到了難以忍受的壓抑和束縛，總在尋求援脫。他們在美洲遼闊的大陸上瘋狂地開著快車無休止地往返奔波，就因為他們在尋求本能的釋放、自我的表達和精神的自由。他們吸毒、放縱性行為、沉浸於爵士樂，在很大程度上也是他們尋求靈魂解放的極端表現，而脫光衣服，赤身裸體，則是他們擺脫束縛的象徵性行為。不過，《在路上》並非僅僅在反映這些育年人如何挑戰主流文化，如何發泄對它的不滿並竭力擺脫其束縛。也就是說，它並不僅僅是在否定，更重要的是，它還致力於表現這些青年人在痛苦地探索新的生活方式和新的信仰。凱魯亞克的最深刻之處，也許還不在於他在作品中表現了垮掉一代極端的生活體驗，他們的反叛與追求，以及他們的仿涅與痛苦，而更在於他對包括他本人在內的由迪恩所體現的那種垮掉一代運動本身的思考。正是這種思考最好地表現了凱魯亞克和垮掉派作家們在精神上的不斷追求和對自身的水無止境地超越。

《在路上》小說中的生活在巨大的矛盾中的年輕人們，毅然決然地選擇了反叛，與所謂的一切社會的「正統」和「秩序」決裂並且決不妥協，固執地獨自上路，拋開一切束縛性的枷鎖。瘋狂地尋找著出路、價值、愛情，或者其他。可是，選擇歸選擇，在實際的疲憊奔波在路上的過程中，他們終究還是會懺悔。向世俗的道德、責任、價值懺悔。乖孩子的路，病人的路，五彩的路，浪盪子的路。任何路。那是一條在任何地方、給任何人走的路。到底在什麼地方，給什麼人，怎麼走?無從回答，沒人會回答。從某種意義上說，同樣是在寫人類共通的精神懺悔。《在路上》中體現的懺悔情緒、所反映的懺悔主題的產生，是有著多方面重要原因的，既有美國社會現實的混亂與荒誕的影響，又有西方文化歷史傳統的反思精神的作用，既有生命個體本身天法擺脫的矛盾因惑的原因，又受到作者凱魯亞克本身具有的深重的個性化的懺悔意識的制約。

如同別的經典作品一樣，凱魯亞克的書也反映了當時主流社會對待婦女的態度。小說中薩爾和迪安用諸如「腰子」、「小姐」、「賣弄風騷」、「肥碩」等詞語稱呼他們見到的姑娘和女侍者，實則表現出了男權社會對女性的輕視和侮辱。雖然凱魯亞克借薩爾之口幾次表達了他對這些婦女的同情，但他做的更多的卻是去適應，而不是改變。總之，《在路上》中的女性雖然不是整部書描寫的主要對象，但正是因為有了她們的支撐和襯托，書中的男性形象才會如此鮮活。垮掉一代的瘋狂和放縱才會如此真實地展現在讀者的面前。

藝術特色

《在路上》的創作本身就是自發性寫作的典範。從創作時間看，這部小說應該說是垮掉派的第一部傑作。這部小說，同其他垮掉派作家和詩人的創作一樣，明顯繼承和進一步發揚了惠特曼詩歌傳統，突出地表現出「自發性寫作」的性質和特點，使作品的思想內容和藝術風格達到了高度的統一。

該書具有濃郁的象徵主義色彩，這種象徵手法主要體現在三個方面：第一，在人物生活變化的同時，也伴隨著季節的變化二例如，在紐約、南方和新奧爾良的時候正值春季，在衣阿華、內布拉斯加、丹佛、內華達、聖路易和印第安納的時候是秋季，而在布特、北達科他、波特蘭和愛達荷的時候就變成了冬季；第二，色彩意象和高度個性化的象徵主義；第三，宗教方面的象徵主義二在整個故事中，敘述者不斷追求的「它」，就是一個典型的追求形象。

作品影響

《在路上》出版後名列暢銷書排行榜，除了1960年代初的遲滯，一直在美國和西歐國家銷量穩定。至已售出300多萬本，在美國、日本、西班牙、法國、義大利和中國出版發行，被譯成25種語言。

這部作品對美國文學影響巨大，作為突破美國戰後保守文化、追求個性解放的破冰之作，凱魯亞克的《在路上》從各個方面影響了美國的文化藝術與價值觀念。1957年《在路上》出版後，凱魯亞克一夜成名。美國售出了億萬條牛仔褲和百萬台煮咖啡機，並且促使無數青年人踏上了漫遊之路。據2007年新聞顯示，本書仍以10萬冊的銷量在美國風行。

本片是導演奧利弗·斯通繼《野戰排》的反戰主題以後，以一個白領股票新手的視覺為切入點，拍攝的抨擊和揭露資本主義經濟制度下的貪欲罪惡的電影。本片的時機顯然也是有所選擇，它挑在美國金融市場的公債丑聞出現以後，華爾街特別容易受攻擊的時候出現在公眾面前。

電影有著傳統的情節設計：飢渴的年輕人渴望接近前輩得到成功，結果被引誘，被欺騙，最後試圖翻盤。實際的細節其實並不太重要。八十年代的銀幕上少有角色如戈登這般的冷酷無情又令人信服。如果說影片有什麼缺陷的話，可能設置的查理·辛一角有問題。因為他看上去還不夠貪婪和無情，不大容易讓人覺得他最後確實有勇氣把戈登拖下馬來。

奧利弗·斯通本片的最大成功在於公認他將金融市場的不擇手段演繹得復雜而又可信，同時又顯得十分有意義。任何人都可能被它吸引，因為股票操縱的細節和走漏消息描繪的很真實，大多數時候我們知道接下來會發生什麼，而且從頭至尾，我們知道這一切發生是為了什麼。

盡管戈登的違法行為讓華爾街的大多數人反對，但他的大價值觀將是被贊同的，合法的騙局能帶來金錢，他們一定就會去做。可能被提名為總體候選人的大金融家Donald Trump，就曾在他的自傳中說道：很簡單，金錢對他的吸引力已經不太大了，他更多的動機是為了參與這種挑戰並且成為贏家。他的坦白讓人欣賞。但是人們要警惕的關鍵在於，這種價值觀的兩面，一邊是金錢，一邊是獲勝，並沒有提及到任何的生產商品和服務、製造產品、發明某些設備、建造某些廠房等實業方面的財富創造手段。

本片的真正目的其實並不是抨擊華爾街的罪行。奧利弗·斯通攻擊的是將追求利潤與財富置於任何其他事情之上的價值觀。他的電影體現出了一種金融世界的兇殘氣氛，即不管道德的死活，一切向錢看。隨之而來的法律，應該僅僅是懲罰的一部分而已。
