《神探飛機頭》、《阿獃和阿瓜》、《面具》、《神探飛機頭續集》等喜劇片的出台，確立了金凱瑞在觀眾心目中的王牌喜劇明星的地位，他的那張表情豐富的臉，那變化無窮的五官簡直令觀眾著迷。著名導演彼得威爾（曾執導《加里波底》、《危險年代》、《證人》等片）甚至租了《神探飛機頭》回家看，並感嘆道：「我的感想是，他在默片時代一定會紅。他的搞笑方式很直接，表情又豐富，你根本不知道他到底長什麼樣子。他很超現實。」於是，彼得威爾找到金凱瑞來做超現實影片《楚門的世界》的男主角楚門伯班。 一直想嘗試在演技上有所變化的凱瑞當然不會放過這次絕好的機會。當威爾找到他時，凱瑞看過《楚門的世界》劇本後，便爽快地接受了這個角色。與以往的搞笑方式不同，在《楚》片中，金凱瑞的表演加入了更深的內涵。他說：「我之所以如此表現是因為角色要求的自然特質。我考慮我作為一個演員，盡管是在演喜劇，也必須把一些想法融入其中，再通過角色表現出來。我從不會否認的是，我有一部分本能就是想讓觀眾開懷大笑。」結果，在《楚》片中金凱瑞的完美表演，不僅為該片贏得了豐厚的票房收入，也使得他贏得了本屆金球獎最佳男演員獎的殊榮。
