本片根據上個世紀30年代發生在日本的真實故事改編，1987年在日本拍成電影後創造了40億日元的票房 《暮色》在美國西雅圖一個名叫鳳凰城的地方，住著一位英俊帥氣的男青年愛德華。他出沒神秘，與世無爭，沒有人知道他的來歷和家世，更重要的是……他是一隻永遠不會衰老，更不會死亡的吸血鬼。愛德華生於20世紀的第一年，出身於吸血鬼世家的他，自從1918年發育成長為十七歲的翩翩少年之後，他便再也沒有衰老，永遠保持著年輕俊朗的外形。時光飛梭，過了近百年後，他已經不再靠吸人血為生，因為愛德華喜歡生活在人群聚集的城市中。為了避免吸食人血帶來的命案干擾到他的生活，他現在只是偶爾在郊區追捕動物，維持著他永駐的青春。
十七歲的少女伊莎貝拉從小與母親相依為命，因為父母的感情破裂，母親帶著她去了另一個城市。但當她長大的時候，母親卻決定再婚。伊莎貝拉無法接受繼父，因此決定回到父親查理的身邊。伊莎貝拉回到了她的家鄉鳳凰城，在學校里，她結識了愛德華，很快他便被愛德華的幽默、開朗等等魅力所吸引，漸漸喜歡上了他。
不過，愛德華雖然也喜歡伊莎貝拉，可是他卻深知，一隻吸血鬼是沒有辦法和人類正常生活在一起的。但他有無法忘卻伊莎貝拉，也不忍心遠走高飛，與伊莎貝拉斷絕音信。更嚴重的是，每當和人類走得太近，愛德華就無法抑制自己吸血的本能，所以每次貝拉對他的親昵舉動，愛德華也只能強忍內心吸血的生物慾望。而這時候，愛德華家族的死敵又找上門來，妄圖消滅整個愛德華家族。內憂外患的愛德華，究竟與貝拉的感情會走到什麼地步，家族的危機又如何去解決呢？
